Ray Foundation was glad to sponsor a unique and noble movement this year, THE SWACHHABILITY RUN 2017.
Swachh Ability Run draws its inspiration from the spirit of selfless service, epitomized by The Indian Army. Celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, it is a unique run carrying a strong message about two important causes – inclusion of Divyangs as equal and Swachh Bharat. Towards this goal people with disabilities challenge their physical capacities through a run and further lead to the Swachh drive.
This unique concept was conceived by Major D P Singh, the Indian Blade Marathon Runner. Mr. Singh is a Kargil war veteran and was supported by the Indian Army for the run aimed to give confidence to differently-abled people.
A "Swachh-Ability Run 2017" was organized in five cities Panjim, Belagavi, Hubballi, Mangaluru and Bengaluru, over seven days from 5th to 12th November in a 10km & 3km run. The movement was able to touch 96 Schools, 9414 Children, 643 Divyangs and 13138 participants in total.
To bring the patriotic spirit and respect towards sacrifice of families of our martyrs, 20 martyr’s family/ wounded warriors/ decorated veterans were the Guest of Honours and the movement shared about their sacrifice with participants. Our very well-known and lovable heroes like Hannumanthappa Kopad, SM (who was found buried alive at Siachen after 7 days) and Maj Sandeep Unnikrishnan, AC (P) (26/11 Mumbai attack martyr) were also included. The opening ceremony at Panjim was honoured with the presence of the Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Manohar Parrikar. The movement culminated with a ceremony held in Delhi on 1st December to commemorate the "International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwD)" which is on 3rd December 2017.
